How do we interact with one another when certain issues divide us?
How can polarisation be overcome – in our day-to-day interactions? How can we overcome the divisions and lack of communication, as well as the strong feelings of mutual threat, rejection or even contempt, when people with different views and standpoints come face to face? And how can we uphold our own positions in the process – and when is it necessary to draw clear boundaries?
These questions are highly relevant in light of the current forces threatening democracy and the growing political and social polarisation in Germany.
We want to discuss with you how camps are formed – and how they can be broken down. Where does the line lie between the values and positions one personally stands for, the universal values and fundamental principles of our liberal democracy that must be defended – and a camp into which one takes refuge? In doing so, we also want to examine why our human biology reinforces polarisation and what it takes to tolerate contradictions and use them constructively.
This evening is based on the idea of the salon as a space for socialising, meaningful conversation and inspiration – and, in keeping with the theme, a space in which we aim to engage in open and respectful debate with one another.
