Film night: Happily forgetting one’s way into death

Socius Laboratory 11-2024

Overview

As part of the Mourning Week 2026 organised by the Mourning Task Force We will be screening a film by our colleague and friend Monia Ben Larbi about her mother’s life and death whilst living with dementia.

This documentary tells the story of Sabine, a woman full of joie de vivre and a keen traveller who spends her life travelling the globe, particularly enjoying her time in Tunisia and the Oderbruch region. Sabine is diagnosed with dementia and very deliberately comes to terms not only with the illness itself, but also with the way in which she will die as a result.
Instead of withdrawing, she is open about her situation. She talks about her wishes, invites people to a „dress rehearsal“ for her own funeral, paints, laughs and actively shapes her life right up to the very end.
Together with her family, she finds her own way of coping with this period.

The result is a very personal perspective on a subject that is often avoided.
Death, saying goodbye and grief are not ignored, but are integrated into everyday life.

For whom?

For whom?

This evening is for anyone who comes into contact with people living with dementia in their daily lives, and for anyone preparing to provide end-of-life care for a person with dementia; or who are simply interested in exploring what caring for someone with dementia might look like when a family embraces self-determination as much as is humanly possible.
